Installation Guide

Our Installation Guide

Moving can be stressful enough without having to worry about your Internet and tv service. Cable and Internet service provider Xfinity makes the installation process as easy as possible. This handy guide will have you streaming and browsing in no time with your new Xfinity internet service.

To get started, first check to see if the service is available in the area you are moving to. Once you have determined that service is available, you have the option to set up your equipment yourself or schedule installation with a technician.

Professional Installation vs. self-installation

Even if you are not a tech-savvy person, the self-installation process through Xfinity is simple and straightforward. Self-installation allows you to install Xfinity at any time, day or night, without scheduling an appointment. Technicians will usually set appointments within a two to four-hour window and require an adult to be present for the installation.

Installation Cost

Installing your Xfinity Internet and cable service yourself is less expensive. The cost of professional installation is currently set at about $90.00, while the cost to self-install only includes the shipping fee for the Xfinity self-install kit. Unfortunately, if you are moving to a home that has not been previously wired for Xfinity, you will need to use a professional to install.

Your self-installation kit

If you have chosen to self-install, you will need to place an order with Xfinity to have the kit shipped to your address. This can be done when you order your service, or you can contact customer service to place your order. You can choose to have it shipped to your home or pick up your kit at the nearest service center.

How to self-install Xfinity Cable

Similar to the Xfinity Self-Install Internet Kit, you can self-install your cable service by ordering equipment and following the installation process.

1 Connecting the Xfinity modem/router

  • If you have an existing modem or router, disconnect the device before you begin setting up the Xfinity gateway. Xfinity's xFi gateway.
  • Place the router in a central location away from exterior walls and windows, if possible.
  • Find the coax cable contained in your kit. Plug into the gateway at the location marked Cable/RF in. Plug the other end of the coax into the cable wall outlet.
  • Connect your power cable found in your kit to the designated area on the back of your gateway. Plug the other end into the electrical outlet.
  • If your wireless gateway has a power button, press it now. If it does not have a power button, the system should start automatically.
  • There should be three blinking lights when the system starts up: Power, US/DS, Online.
  • When they stop blinking and remain solid for a minute, you can move on to the next step.

2 Connect to the Internet

  • Select a device that you have used before to connect to the internet such as your phone, tablet, or laptop
  • Connect to your WiFi network
  • Open your usual web browser
  • If your device asks you for a PIN instead of a password, click on the option to connect using a security key instead

3 Activate your service

  • You will need your account number to complete the application. If you don't have it or cannot find it, log in to your My Account App using your User ID. Go to Account Information and you will see your Xfinity account number.
  • Open a browser and go to www.xfinity.com/Activate. If you see a homepage, your account is activated.
  • If a homepage does not appear, you will have to finish the activation process. You may be prompted to enter account information.
  • Simply follow the prompts until the activation process is complete.

If you can't install your Xfinity wifi yourself

Sometimes, you cannot complete the installation yourself. Perhaps your home is not already wired for service. Regardless of the reason, there are a few things you should know.

1 Set an Appointment

Set an appointment through customer service when you order your installation. You will be given an appointment on a 'first available' basis. If you are not able to accommodate the appointed time, such as you are working and can only schedule a weekend install, it may cause your appointment time to be delayed.

2 Technician

Your technician will schedule your appointment in a window of two to four hours. For example, your appointment may be Monday afternoon between 2 and 6 pm. Though the customer service representative will try to schedule the best they can, they cannot foresee unexpected circumstances that might delay the installer.

If your house has not previously been wired, the installation process could take up to four hours.

3 Be Prepared

To expedite installation, it is best to prepare:

  • Have computers, TVs, etc. available at the time of installation.
  • Allow access to existing cable outlets or know where you want them installed.
  • Make sure an adult is available and all pets are secured.

The bottom line

Xfinity has optimized self-installation with a mailable kit, easy to follow instructions, and technical help when needed. Though professional technicians are available for installation, self-installation is easy, affordable and can be done on your own flexible schedule.
